Buying thoughtfully

A closer look before you buy

A practical checklist for secondhand clothing, jewelry and small objects: condition, fit, materials and the details a photograph cannot settle.

What should you check when buying secondhand?

Start with condition and whether the piece works for you. Inspect closures, seams, surfaces and dimensions. Ask for clear photographs of wear and labels. Treat an uncertain maker, age or material as unknown; an attractive photograph is not authentication.

Clothing: measure something you already love

Compare the listed measurements with a similar garment you own rather than relying on the size label alone. Look at underarms, cuffs, hems, lining and closures. Ask about repairs or alterations. A piece that requires work can still be appealing, but include that work in your budget before deciding.

Jewelry: separate appearance from evidence

Inspect the clasp, links, posts and stone settings. Ask what supports any claim about metal or stones. A gold-colored finish is not the same as verified gold, and a turquoise-colored stone is not proof of natural turquoise. If a material claim is important to the purchase, seek appropriate verification rather than relying on appearance or a stamp alone.

Small objects: check every side

Ask to see the base, edges and interior, especially on ceramics and glass. Consider stability, chips, cracks and the space the object will occupy. Decorative vintage vessels should not be assumed food-safe. For an electrical item, establish its condition and any necessary inspection before using it.

Ask the question before checkout

If condition, dimensions or intended use are unclear, ask before buying. Review the specific seller’s return and fulfillment terms. A lower price does not solve a fit problem, and patina is only appealing when you are comfortable with the actual wear.
